His simple life changes drastically after a mysterious encounter with an escaped convict in a graveyard, and a strange visit to Satis House, the home of the eccentric Miss Havisham, where he meets Estella, a beautiful yet arrogant girl. These meetings grow “great expectations” inside Pip to leave his simple life and become a rich and educated “young gentleman,” especially to impress Estella. Pip’s dream comes true unexpectedly when a lawyer, Mr. Jaggers, tells him that he will receive a large fortune from a mysterious benefactor. Pip moves to London, lives luxuriously, and tries hard to become a true gentleman, even beginning to feel ashamed of his origins. However, a bitter truth is revealed: his secret benefactor is not Miss Havisham, but the convict he once helped. This discovery, along with tragedy and betrayal, forces Pip to face the painful reality about the true values in life, and to learn about love and kindness.
